Chemistry (BA) - Chemical Education

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree is designed for students preparing for careers such as medicine, dentistry, environmental studies, veterinary medicine, patent law, secondary science education or forensic chemistry. The Chemical Education Major combines the rigorous requirements of the Chemistry B.A. program with content-specific pedagogy to prepare students interested in teaching chemistry at the secondary level. The Chemical Education major offers a degree in the discipline with multiple field experiences in diverse classroom settings and culminates in a full-time teaching internship. Upon graduation from the program, students are endorsed for Full Teacher Certification by the State of Florida’s Department of Education.

The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education with ESOL Endorsement is an initial teacher preparation program designed to train future teachers of students from preK-3 to grade 3. The program is designed to provide students with general knowledge of teaching and pedagogical practices, as well as specific knowledge relevant to working in the early childhood education field.

Earth Sciences

The Bachelors of Arts in Earth Sciences provides Earth Science background for those who intend to enter non-science fields, such as public administration, law, and especially teaching. The major in Earth Science Education leads to teacher certification within the State of Florida, including 6 credits of student teaching in the senior year. Knowledge of Earth Sciences is essential for understanding problems of climate change, groundwater supply, weather and environmental hazards, geotechnical engineering, and natural resource management. Students have the opportunity to work in well-equipped Earth Science laboratories and to learn the major techniques used in the Earth Sciences, including meteorology, hydrogeology, oceanography and geology.

Their education provides ways of looking at the world as well as a body of knowledge on which to draw. All English majors take a common core of twelve credits and then specialize in one of four tracks: Literature, Writing and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, Linguistics. Through reading, discussing, and writing about significant texts, students enhance their abilities to understand and analyze fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfictional prose; at the same time, they gain insights into individual lives and cultures that enrich their own experiences. FIU English majors enjoy a variety of professional and educational careers including editing and publishing, teaching, technical writing, law, corporate and not-for-profit management, information technology and graduate study in English, Linguistics and other disciplines. Majoring in English prepares students for graduate work in English and for admission to law school; in addition, students can enter a careers where good writing and excellent critical thinking skills are required.
